In Car Safety

The In Car Safety programme has been designed to raise awareness of the importance of correctly fitted seats and proper restraints for children. The scheme launched across Scotland on June 13 2003. The programme has been designed to encourage parents to take road safety more seriously.

The programme has been developed in response to the 2002 In Car Safety Campaign research, which showed that out of 2000 car seats, 40% of them were not fitted correctly. All Scottish police forces will work alongside our various partners to support it, in an effort to significantly reduce child casualties.

A brand new scheme has been introduced for Scottish retailers in order to make sure seats are being used properly. This means that participating retailers will guarantee to provide a high level of service to any customer purchasing new seats from them. The criteria for this scheme includes:

• providing a trained member of staff

• checking the weight and height of the child

• ensuring the seat fits the customer’s car as well as the child

• giving advice on fitting

The programme, which has been developed and organised by the Dynamic Advertising Group, runs for 4 weeks across Scotland and includes almost 70 car clinics where concerned parents can have their existing car seats checked.
